Three months ago, a pair of Whatcom County Sheriff's Department named Ryan Rathbun and Jason Thompson arrived at the behest of multiple 911 calls regarding a shootout between two neighbors. Upon arriving, the deputies encountered an intoxicated man named Joel Berck Young (60), who ignored their request for surrender. Instead, Young cursed them out before whipping out his 12-gauge shotgun and shooting both deputies in the head. Although both members of law enforcement sustained injuries, they survived, and so did the shooter, who remains behind bars at the Whatcom County Jail. Upon his arrest, Young was levied with multiple charges, including two counts of first-degree attempted murder and felony harassment.
