Lil Kim has cemented her status in hip-hop as one of the more prolific women artists to emerge from the art form. The Brooklyn emcee shared the mic with the likes of the Notorious B.I.G., Jay-Z, and more. While many once believed Kim didn’t pen her lyrics at one point because of her work with Biggie, Kim recently set the record straight during an interview with XXL.
The rapper spoke to XXL for their ‘Legends Cover Series’ and reflected on her storied career. At one point in the interview, Kim revealed that she’s written for numerous artists, including Diddy.
Kim compared her catalog and skillset to Michael Jackson, saying, “To me, my albums start from Notorious K.I.M., ’cause Hard Core is a classic. It’s just something different. It’s a staple. It’s monumental, like something that just is like in a museum. You don’t even put a number on it, you know what I mean? It’s just something like how I look at Michael Jackson’s albums, you know what I mean? It’s just a classic.”
From there, Kim made it clear her pen is a force to be reckoned with, saying, “And by the way, all this talk about writing, I’ve wrote for other people. I’ve wrote on Diddy’s album. Check your credits, homeboy. Whoever his name is, I just learned about some guy that was talking smack. Whatever. Yeah. Do your homework, el stupido.”
