ILoveMakonnen recently appeared on NPR Music and spoke candidly about his past musical relationship with Drake and his OVO label. The rapper and singer pointed out how things became sour at the label, and how he ended up leaving.
Makonnen recalled when the relationship between him and Drake went left, saying comments about him while they were at the 2015 Wireless Festival is when things got bad. “That’s when I knew something was weird. Just ’cause when I came out on set…and I started losing weight too, right—Drake had made a little joke like, ‘He a little Eric Benét-ass looking n***a.’ You know, like, ha-ha. And then I just started to feel this vibe,” said Makonnen.
It noted by Makonnen that his sexuality was not an issue in the failed working relationship with OVO, saying his tweets from years earlier were the cause of tension. When speaking about the tweets, Makonnen said, “[It’s] our little outlet. That’s our only way of attention. It ain’t nothing personal.” Makonnen then laid out more of how he and Drake fell out.
