There was once a time in the mid-90s when Shaquille O'Neal's dual attempt at NBA and rap stardom was widely accepted throughout the urban community. His hit single, "Strait Playin," remains one of the most commercially successful songs in the history of athletes-turned-musicians in America. Shaq released four albums en route to achieving platinum success with Shaq Diesel in 1993.
Although Shaq, as well as Allen Iverson, both gave valiant efforts as full-time athletes trying their hand at one of the most challenging jobs in music, the heights they reached have been surpassed by Damian Lillard of the Portland Trailblazers. Unbeknownst to the mainstream, this seven-time All-Star goes by the rap name Dame D.O.L.L.A. His penmanship and lyricism have helped him amass an impressive music catalog that's constantly rotating amongst a decent fraction of hip-hop fans on Spotify. On a monthly basis, over 300,000 fans listen to songs like "Kobe" featuring Snoop Dogg, "Stuntin' On You" featuring DDG, and "About That Time" featuring G-Eazy.
A few nights ago, the Portland Trailblazers' flight got delayed, and the players got stuck on their plane for nearly seven hours due to snow. So, with nothing else to do, Damian and his teammates made an impromptu video where he went full-on 'Dame D.O.L.L.A' mode while dropping a freestyle that went viral. The clip starts with Dame's teammate, Jerami Grant, giving the viewers a brief intro before the camera pans back to Dame, who begins to rap. One of Dame's most memorable lines was, "shooters in the locker room like we the Wizards." Lyrics that playfully align the team's three-point shooters with the infamous gun incident of 2009 involving Gilbert Arenas and his former Washington Wizards teammate, Javaris Crittenton.
