On Friday, the NBA kicked off a slew of festivities during the commencement of NBA All-Star weekend in Salt Lake City, Utah. Among the impressive list of activities was the annual celebrity basketball game. The showcase featured a match of makeshift basketball squads led by Dwyane Wade (the minority owner of the Utah Jazz) and Ryan Smith (the governor of the Utah Jazz).
The game took place at the Jon M. Huntsman Center, and it was by far the most spirited competition of the entire All-Star Weekend. "Team Smith" featured the likes of former professional athletes such as NFL Hall of Famer Calvin Johnson, music sensations like Kane Brown, and WWE star The Miz, who drained a tantalizing buzzer-beater from half-court that would have sent the game into overtime. But, unfortunately, time expired right before he got the shot off.
Ultimately, "Team Wade" stood victorious, 81-78. Seattle Seahawks' star wide receiver DK Metcalf shined the brightest on this night, as he led a roster with celebrities such as 21 Savage, Nicky Jam, Janelle Monae, Jesser and Simi Liu, and more. The game's MVP registered 20 points and four blocks while crashing the boards and hauling in 10 rebounds. DK Metcalf's 1.9% body fat and 40.5 vertical jumps were on full display as his highlight reel for the evening featured several thunderous dunks.
At 6'4 and 236 lbs, DK is larger than Golden State Warriors starting power forward Draymond Green and far more nimble on the basketball court. Meanwhile, on the football field, when DK lines up at wide receiver, he is typically opposed by an NFL defensive back that is about 6'0, about 180 lbs (according to the league average). On Friday night, his high-flying act was so graceful that he was praised by fellow athletes on social media. However, DK also received a message from his employers at the NFL league office shortly thereafter, indicating they were just as suspicious of the on-court performance as they were impressed. Roger Goodell, the NFL's commissioner, summoned him for a random performance-enhancing drug test. In response, DK shared a screenshot of the message with his followers on social media. Several NFL players game to his defense on Twitter, condemning Roger Goodell and the NFL for their accusatory approach.
Although the mere mention of PEDs carries a stigma in the world of sports, because of iconic names like Mark McGwire, Sammy Sosa, Barry Bonds, Roger Clemens, and Lance Armstrong, it isn't perceived as a career-ending death sentence in the NFL. Last year, Arizona Cardinals star wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins was suspended for six games for violating the NFL's PED policy.
