Last Thursday in Rockdale County, Georgia, a disagreement between a student and her teacher quickly escalated into a face-to-face shouting match, resulting in a physical altercation. The incident occurred inside a classroom at Heritage High School and it was captured on camera by numerous eyewitnesses. The footage begins with the teacher, Tiwanna Turner, seemingly engaged in a phone call where she was asking for assistance in order to deal the student. But as the young student continues to shout directly in Tiwanna's face, the teacher tells the student to move. This prompts the student to slap the cell phone out of her teacher's hand before shoving her. In response, Tiwanna turns her back and walks out of the classroom toward the hallway in an effort to get help. The student then followed behind Tiwanna and slammed the door on her. As Tiwanna tried to re-enter her classroom, the student tried to impede her progress with a hard push.
"Don't put your hands on me!" The teacher said as she attempted to physically restrict the student. "Don't put your hands on me again!"
This appeared to irritate the student as she soon began to swing at Tiwanna, landing a bevy of slaps to the head before wrestling her to the ground. The fight spilled out of the classroom into the hallway, where faculty members rushed in and broke things up. Unfortunately for the teacher, she suffered a broken leg, and she remains hospitalized. Since then, a GoFundMe campaign has been set up for, Tiwanna, a 27-year veteran in the field of education. As of Wednesday, the initiative raised over $50,000, which will be needed because she faces a long road to recovery that will require rehabilitation and therapy.
Following the attack, a spokesperson for the Rockdale County School District released the following statement.
"RCPS does not tolerate student violence towards any staff members. Students who harm other students or staff will be disciplined according to our Student Discipline Code of Conduct and will be appropriately charged by law enforcement."
The young assailant involved has been arrested and charged with aggravated battery.
