Mars, M&M's parent company, announced the launch of their all-female packaging that features the green, brown, and purple colored candies. The photo of the three M&M's will be flipped upside down to show how women "are flipping how they define success," according to PR Newswire.

This comes after Mars stirred controversy with their make-over of M&M's characters nearly a year ago, which they said was their approach to "creating a world where everyone feels they belong and society is inclusive." In the switch, the green M&M swapped her high heel boots for a pair of "cool, laid-back sneakers to reflect her effortless confidence." The brown character got block heels, instead of her signature stiletto.

In 2015, M&M stirred speculation that the brown and green characters were in a lesbian relationship after they tweeted a photo of them holding hands on the beach. The tweet was made just two days after the Supreme Court effectively legalized gay marriage. The tweet was made from the point-of-view of the green character, which read, "It’s rare Ms. Brown and I get to spend time together without some colorful characters barging in."

Mars has addressed speculation about the two characters, and they now say that their relationship is based on the two "together throwing shine and not shade."

In 2022, the purple M&M was introduced to represent acceptance and inclusivity, with many believing that it represents plus-sized people. Jane Hwang, global VP at Mars Wrigley said, "There is so much about our new spokescandy that people can relate to and appreciate, including her willingness to embrace her true self - our new character reminds us to celebrate what makes us unique."
