A cisgender Ecuadorian man reportedly went through the process to legally change his gender to female in an attempt to win custody of his two daughters.
René Salinas Ramos, 47, said the move was solely a way to circumvent the Ecuadorian legal system that gives preference to mothers over fathers in custody rulings.
“The laws say that the one who has the right is the woman. As of this moment, I am female. Now I’m also a mom, that’s how I consider myself,” Ramos told Ecuadorian outlet La Voz del Tomebamba. “I am very sure of my sexuality. What I have sought is that I want to be a mother, so that I can also give the love and protection of a mother.”
However, LGBTQ groups are raising concerns over Ramos's exploitation of a law that was designed to help promote trans rights. “This man’s private matter, to obtain custody of his daughters, isn’t the spirit of the law,” the national director of the Ecuadorian Federation of Organizations LGBTI Diane Rodríguez told VICE World News.
