A video clip of a New Jersey Transit bus driver getting beaten up by a group of teens before rising to his feet and opening fire on the assailants has gone viral, sparking the hashtag #Freethebusdriver on social media. Following the wild on-camera incident, the bus driver, Charles Fieros (48), was arrested for unlawful possession of a handgun, aggravated assault, receiving stolen property, attempted murder, and more.
The footage depicts the 48-year-old in uniform while being roughed up by six individuals in their adolescence. With a bystander pleading for the beating to stop in the background, Fieros managed to stand up before drawing his 9mm Glock handgun. This prompted the group to scatter. They all got away, except for one 15-year-old who caught the brunt of the gunfire. He was hit three times, causing significant injuries. Thus far, details about the events leading up to the scuffle and shooting have not been revealed.
The video has been viewed nearly two million times igniting a series of debates online about who was truly at fault and if the bus driver had the right to shoot when the teens were already fleeing.
