A former Texas police officer was sentenced to nearly 12 years in prison for the fatal shooting of Atatiana Jefferson.

Aaron Dean was convicted of manslaughter last week for the 2019 shooting and was handed down a sentence of “11 years, 10 months and 12 days” on Tuesday.

Jefferson was fatally shot after a neighbor reached out to law enforcement to conduct a welfare check after they noticed Jefferson's door was open. Jefferson was playing video games with her 8-year-old nephew when authorities arrived with guns drawn and immediately opening fire through the front windows. Dean said that he believed he saw Jefferson pointing a gun at him.

In response to Dean's sentencing, Jefferson's sister Ashley Carr expressed how she wished he received more time.

“Eleven years, that’s the same age as Zion,” Carr stated. “Ten months, 12 days, that’s the day that it happened. It’s a message in this. It might not be the message that we wanted and the whole dream, but it’s some of it.”
