According to reports, a 66-year-old California man named Mark Waters is facing felony assault charges after he allegedly shot a 21-year-old unarmed Black man who was walking to the grocery store from an Airbnb rental he was staying at. Police have described the attack as “unprovoked.”

The shooting reportedly occurred on October 2, 2022, and the Santa Clarita District Attorney’s office noted the man “quickly approached” the suspect with a handgun after seeing him walk out of the Airbnb. The victim tried to run off but was shot as his back was turned by Waters, who ended up hitting the young man in the leg.

The victim was taken to a local hospital, and medical aid was provided to the 21-year-old. San Jose police reportedly searched Waters’ home and seized eight firearms registered to the suspect. District Attorney Jeff Rosen spoke on the situation, saying, “Everyone should be safe walking to the store. We will not tolerate such senseless and violent acts in this County. We wish the victim a speedy recovery and will make sure he receives justice for this brutal assault.”
