According to reports, a California reparations committee is suggesting that the state fork over $223,200 to each black resident who is a descendant of the formerly enslaved.

The reparations task force formed by California Gov. Gavin Newsom is focusing on "housing discrimination" and estimate that black residents of the state are owed for past practices to the tune of $569 billion to compensate them for setbacks between 1933 and 1977.

While the committee has until June 2023 to submit its final recommendation for legislature, the nine-member panel has cited other structural/institutional barriers toward black progress such as mass incarceration, substandard health care, unjust property seizures, and the devalution of black businesses.
