This past Tuesday, R. Kelly and his team filed two motions at Chicago’s federal court requesting a new trial or reversal of his conviction.

In September 2022, Kelly was found guilty of three counts of child pornography. The singer was acquitted of a conspiracy charge for obstructed justice related to a 2008 child pornography trial, along with a fourth court of child pornography.

The motions were filed by Kelly’s attorney—Jennifer Bonjean, who requested an acquittal for all the counts. Bonjean went on to argue there was a lack of evidence that the singer “coerced” underage victims and that a witness in court gave false information. The lawyer says sexual predator expert Darrel Turner made false statements. Bonjean said, “Had the jurors known that Dr. Turner actively misled them, the jurors would likely have rejected his testimony outright.”

The singer was sentenced to 30 years in prison after he was convicted of sex trafficking and racketeering in New York. Kelly’s sentencing for federal charges will take place on February 23, 2023.
