Jerry Springer became a pop culture icon with his daytime talk show which showed significant amounts of fighting and arguing stemming from the hot topics discussed by guests brought on his show. The popularity of his show grew as each episode dived deeper into the abyss of what would lay the groundwork for modern-day reality television. While many would consider Springer to be a pioneer of sorts, Springer has issued an apology for a role he feels he played in ruining the culture.

While on the ‘Behind the Velvet Rope’ podcast, Springer was asked if he considered himself the “granddaddy of reality TV.” The former daytime TV show host didn’t want to own the title, instead saying, “No, I’d just apologize.”

Springer gave more insight into his apology, saying, “I’m so sorry. What have I done? I’ve ruined the culture. I just hope hell isn’t that hot, because I burn real easy. I’m very light-complected.” The retired talk show host said his time in the TV world lasted because he “got lucky” and that he never had dreams of being in show business.

Springer spoke about the ‘Jerry Springer Show’ success being “pure luck” and talked about how he got his show in the first place. “I started out being a lawyer and working for Bobby Kennedy,” he said. “My background is political and legal. And then, after being mayor, I was offered the job to anchor the news for the NBC affiliate in Cincinnati. I did that for 10 years and that was a kind of a rational transition,” said Springer.
