Three weeks ahead of Halloween, a group of locals in North Las Vegas were terrorized by a man who may have been inspired by a classic horror film of the same namesake. According to reports, a man named Christopher Earl Smith (44) was seen waving his gun around and threatening various individuals with violence near the intersection of Martin Luther King Boulevard and Carey Boulevard. All of the madness occurred while Smith was donning an infamous 'Michael Meyers' mask. When Officer Anthony Malear (29) arrived on the scene (around 5:20 pm) to confront Smith, he immediately called for the suspect's attention as soon as he spotted him walking through a park.

"Hey, Police, stop right there. Hey, stop...stop right there...Put your hands up, put your hands up, dude, I'm not playing with you," Officer Malear said as the suspect walked towards a small group of people while glancing back toward the cop.

"Stop reaching! Don't reach!" Officer Malear continued.

This confrontation was captured by the officer's body camera, and while the footage is inconclusive, Smith allegedly reached for a gun, which prompted Officer Malear to shoot him eight times, hitting the suspect in the torso, legs, and arm. Had he survived, Smith would have faced several charges for his actions, including attempted grand larceny, possession of a stolen firearm, assault with a deadly weapon, robbery with a deadly weapon against an elderly person, and more. But Smith was pronounced dead at the scene. In the wake of the fatal shooting, Officer Malear has been placed on a paid leave of absence pending an invitation into his handling of the matter.
