According to reports, New Orleans now has a higher murder rate than any other city in the United States of America in terms of homicides per population. This is the first time New Orleans has claimed the "Murder Capital of America" moniker since the early 90s. Technically, Chicago, Baltimore, and Philadelphia all have amassed well over twice the amount of murders as the city of New Orleans this year. But Murder rates are determined by dividing the total number of murders by the total population in a specified geographic area, which gives New Orleans the edge over St. Louis.

Homicides in New Orleans have skyrocketed since 2019, and law enforcement officials have pinpointed the majority of the criminal activity to two hot spots within the region, New Orleans East and Central City.

"If you can reduce crime by 50% in those two districts, you are reducing violent crime by 25% in the entire city of New Orleans," said Rafael Goyeneche of the Metropolitan Crime Commission. In order to combat the homicide rates in New Orleans, local authorities have entertained a number of potential solutions, such as a pay raise for NOPD officers and improving their work conditions.
