On Thursday morning, several residents of a neighborhood in San Carlos, California, were rendered speechless when a 33-year-old man named Jose Solano Landaeta allegedly pulled out his sword and beheaded the mother of two children in the middle of the street, right in front of her home. The heinous act was so shocking that the witnesses and sheriff's deputies, who later arrived on the scene, have already begun to receive counseling to help them cope with what they saw.
Shortly after decapitating his 25-year-old victim, near Laurel Street and Magnolia Avenue, the perpetrator made his way down the road until he was finally apprehended by the San Mateo County Sheriffs and charged with murder.
“We can confirm that a stabbing instrument was used in the commission of the crime and that the weapon is outstanding,” the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office said in a statement. “The suspect is known to the victim, and this is believed to be an isolated incident.”
Local authorities have confirmed that the perpetrator and the victim had been involved in a romantic relationship that resulted in a restraining order being filed against the 33-year-old prior to the gruesome murder. The victim leaves behind two children, ages seven and one. The children did not witness her death, and they are currently being looked after by Child Protective Services.
