Update 09/04/2022 4:42pm:
Previously, John Legend spoke on a podcast and revealed that he and Kanye West fell out over politics. Now, in an interview with The New Yorker, John Legend said the split wasn’t just due to politics alone.
Legend went on to say “I don’t feel like politics should be everything in your relationships, and your relationships with people shouldn’t only be determined by who they voted for. But I do believe that certain things you believe in are indicators of your character, and obviously, that will affect your friendships.”
He then explained even more “I don’t want to live a life that’s so consumed by politics that it’s the sole determinant of who can be my friend and who can’t. But values matter and character matters and moral compass matters.” Legend then revealed what will need to happen in order for them to be cool again, noting Kanye’s posting of private text messages is a no-go.

John Legend and Kanye West went their separate ways as friends and colleagues after Kanye started openly supporting Donald Trump, which Legend opened up about recently on The Axe Files podcast.
John explained that issues arose when Kanye started publicly supporting president-elect Donald Trump in 2016. He explained, "[Kanye and I] aren’t friends as much as we used to be. I honestly think because we publicly disagreed on his running for office, his supporting Trump, I think it became too much for us to sustain our friendship, honestly."
John then explained that his friendship with Kanye took another blow when Ye hired one of Donald Trump’s lawyers for his 2020 presidential run, which John pointed out on Twitter. During the podcast, Legend stated, "I wasn’t alone in that, but, you know, he was not happy about that. And we really haven’t been close since then."
