In many cases, throughout urban neighborhoods in the United States, aspiring rappers and basketball players often grow up within close proximity to one another, which is a contributing factor to why hip-hop culture and basketball have always gone hand and hand. Back in the early 2000's, NYC legends Jay-Z and Fat Joe sponsored teams at Rucker Parker, while New Orleans-based rapper Master P flirted with an NBA basketball career. Nowadays, rappers such as J. Cole are trying their hand at amateur basketball leagues while professional hoopers like Damian Lillard have released albums to critical acclaim. Even former NFL players such as Antonio Brown and Cole Beasley have officially released hip-hop tracks in recent years.
While things may appear harmonious on the surface, Southern-based rapper NoCap recently issued a warning to athletes who have been making themselves a little too comfortable in the street culture that rappers often find themselves immersed in.
"Athletes stop choosing sides with rappers before y'all BE NOT SAFE OUT HERE," NoCap tweeted.
