In the wake of the passing of sports icon Bill Russell, Magic Johnson proposed that the league retire Russell's No. 6 jersey across the league to honor his legacy.

"Commissioner Adam Silver should retire number 6 across the @NBA in honor of Bill Russell’s legacy," Magic tweeted on Tuesday.

In response to Russell's passing, Silver issued the following statement:

"I cherished my friendship with Bill and was thrilled when he received the Presidential Medal of Freedom. I often called him basketball's Babe Ruth for how he transcended time. Bill was the ultimate winner and consummate teammate, and his influence on the NBA will be felt forever."

However, it's not immediately clear if the commissioner will consider retiring the number league-wide. If so, and depending on the timeline of the jersey retirement, players like LeBron James would likely be forced to change numbers.
