Bobby Shmurda faced a legal situation similar to the one Young Thug, Gunna, and various members of YSL are entangled in, with the Brooklyn rapper ultimately serving years in prison. Shmurda has been out for some time now and has spoken candidly on the justice system attempting to use rappers’ lyrics against them in the court of law.

While speaking to Hot New Hip Hop, Shmurda talked about New York state’s passing of the “Rap Music on Trial” bill, making it seemingly difficult for prosecutors to use rappers’ songs as evidence in court.

Bobby said, “When they try and do that s**t in the state, I be like ‘yo, they can’t do that sh*t in the state.’ I’m telling my lawyer and he like, ‘yo, they could put it in there but the judge [has the right to decline using it if] they don’t want to.’ So now they can't use it. The feds can’t use it, the state can’t use it. So, it’s good in New York but that s**t need to happen all over the country.”

Shmurda then warned artists on the rise who have still been referencing events in the streets in their lyrics. “Now listen, just because they passed the f**king law guys, do not go on the f**king record talking about you just shot Johnny in his face. Please guys, please guys,” said Bobby. He concluded by saying, “Do not go saying some dumb s**t. But you can express yourself. Express stories better. But don’t do not do anything like, ‘I just shot Johnny in his face.’ Like, what the f**k, bro? Be mindful still, I feel. Still, be mindful.” Watch above.
