When Tiara Mack got elected to Rhode Island Senate last year, she did so in historical fashion, becoming the first-ever Black queer to do so. Despite Senator Mack's groundbreaking accomplishments and heralded support of women's rights, the 28-year-old has become more known, as of late, for a twerking video that she posted on TikTok. The video displays the politician shaking her rump from an upside-down position while rocking a two-piece bikini at the beach. The clip has since gone viral, but it has also pissed off many people from the Black community, the LGBTQ+ community and her constituents within the Democratic Party. When the video clip made its way to Lavern Spice, a Black woman and a Republican candidate for congress, she fired off a scathing rebuke of Senator Mack via Twitter.
"[Tiara Mack] just disgraced herself and disgraced every Black woman running for public office," Spicer wrote.
To that, Senator Mack responded with a checky comment, "Right back at ya girl"
The uproar caused by Senator Mack's 4th of July video became so massive in the 24 hours that followed that she essentially released a statement on Twitter the very next day, defending her right to Twerk while also reminding the public that she is a successful politician who has earned her upstanding stature.
"Can the media cover any policy wins had by the youngest Black state senator in Rhode Island?" The Senator wrote. "As a Black, queer woman you all should know the answer. It’s no. Let’s them carry on their narrative. Me? I’m going to be joyful, free, and unbothered."
Shortly after Senator Mack sent out this Tweet, a known nemesis of the DRC named Tucker Carlson used the Twerking video to mock his rivals in the Democratic Party with a hot take about the senator.
"We saw Tiara Mack with her head in the sand twerking, and we thought, man...that's the Democratic Party!" Carlson said during a segment of his show on Fox News.
Only time will tell if Senator Mack's latest campaign aid will help or hurt her efforts to remain in office. For now, scroll up to watch the video.
