Recently, California Governor Gavin Newsom signed a state law to prevent police from arresting people for loitering for prostitution. The bill was passed by lawmakers last year but was held up by a nine-month delay, according to the Associated Press.

Via a signing message, Newsom went on to say, “To be clear, this bill does not legalize prostitution. It simply revokes provisions of the law that have led to disproportionate harassment of women.” Newsom then pointed out Black, and Latino women are the ones affected by the harassment. Police in California will not be able to arrest anyone for loitering with the intent to engage in prostitution. Newsom noted he agreed with the repeal but said, “we must be cautious about its implementation.” Stay tuned for more updates.
