Authorites have charged Homero Zamorano, the alleged driver of the truck in the Texas migrant tragedy, with one count of alien smuggling resulting in death. According to reports, Zamorano abandoned the truck in a remote area of San Antonio and fled the scene when witnesses heard cries for help emanating from the truck. 

Per the New York Post: 

He attempted to pose as one of the victims and was found hiding in a bush by police officers who arrested him at the scene. He was reportedly high on meth at the time and was taken to a local hospital for treatment.

If convicted, Zamorano could face the death penalty or a maximum of life in prison. Zamorano's co-conspirator Christian Martinez, 28, was also charged on Tuesday and faces similar penalty.

According to reports, at least 42 people were found dead inside a tractor-trailer on a Texas roadway. Authorities say there were 16 survivors of varying conditions that were rushed to the local hospital. It's not immediately clear the circumstances surrounding the deaths but officials do believe these were undocumented migrants.
