Update 06/24/2022 3:26pm:

The family of Daunte Wright has received $3.25 million in a settlement with Brooklyn Center, Minnesota. This comes after Wright was wrongfully killed by a police officer named Kim Potter during a traffic stop, according to lawyers for the family.

The lawyers addressed the news, saying, “This settlement will not be finalized until agreement is also reached on substantial and meaningful non-monetary relief.” Along with receiving a settlement, the family of Wright struck a deal where the city agreed to change its policing policies and training.

Some of the changes to be implemented include weapons confusion, implicit bias, de-escalation, police intervention, and how to handle situations during mental health crises. The legal team also noted a permanent memorial for Daunte Wright would be built at the current Daunte Wright memorial.

Previously, it was revealed the prosecution in the Kim Potter case reduced the requested sentence for the ex-cop who shot 20-year-old Daunte Wright. Potter was convicted of first and second-degree manslaughter, and a motion was filed to give a sentence of 86 months. Now, Potter has received 24 months in prison.

Footage surfaced showing the sentence the ex-Minnesota cop received for killing Wright, with Potter getting a significantly shorter sentence. Despite the sentencing, Potter will only serve 16 months in prison. The remaining part of her sentence will be a supervised release. Along with that, the disgraced cop will have to pay a $1,000 fine.

During the sentencing hearing, Daunte’s mother Katie Wright said she thought Potter was selfish following the shooting, saying the woman was only concerned with getting in touch with a union rep. Because of that, Katie Wright asked that the judge issue the maximum sentence. Watch above.

Kim Potter, the Minneapolis police officer convicted of fatally shooting 20-year-old Daunte Wright, is scheduled to be sentenced on Friday. According to reports, the prosecution is asking for an 86-month sentence after previously stating they would seek a sentence well over the state guidelines.

Roughly two months after she was convicted of first and second-degree manslaughter, Potter will receive her sentence from Judge Regina Chu on Friday at 9 AM. Chu presided over Potter's trial and ordered the former police officer be taken into custody immediately following her guilty verdict. After much bluster from the prosecution over the sentencing they'd seek, on Feb 15 a motion was filed for a standard presumptive sentence of 86 months.

In a statement regarding the sentencing, the Attorney General's office stated, "the appropriate sentence has to be the presumptive sentence set by the legislature until Defendant Potter can convince the Court that society’s interests, including those of Daunte Wright’s family and friends, can be met by some other disposition."
