The situation with basketball player Brittney Griner being detained in Russia has seemingly heated up, as a spokesperson for Vladimir Putin says the WNBA star is NOT a political prisoner.
Putin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov clarified that 31-year-old Griner was locked up in February 2022 due to violating Russian law. Peskov said Griner is being held accountable like “hundreds and hundreds of Russian citizens that were sentenced for carrying hashish.”
Peskov went on to ask, “Why should we make an exemption for a foreign citizen?” before noting that many Americans legally live in Russia. “It’s not about being a hostage. There are lots of American citizens here. They’re enjoying their freedoms … but you have to obey the laws,” said Peskov. Stay tuned for more updates.
