A Michigan police officer pleaded not guilty to a murder charge in connection with the fatal shooting of Patrick Lyoya in Grand Rapids.

Grand Rapids Police Officer Christopher Schurr said he was “justified in his use of force” when he fatally shot Lyoya during a roadside struggle on April 4.

“The defense submits that Officer Schurr, on this charge, was justified in his use of force in this episode and is not guilty in this crime,” said Schurr's attorney Mark Dodge.

Schurr, who is facing a life sentence, was released Friday on $100,000 bond and ordered not to carry a gun and drink alcohol as part of his release.
