A video of a boxing match in South Africa went viral, as it highlighted a scary moment of Simiso Buthelezi turning away from his opponent, punching the air, and seemingly fighting an invisible opponent.
The ref called the fight after the incident with Buthelezi, who was hospitalized and put in a medically induced coma after internal bleeding was discovered. On Wednesday (June 8), it was announced that the 24-year-old athlete had passed away.
A joint statement with Buthelezi's family and Boxing South Africa (BSA) reads: "It is with great sadness for Boxing South Africa and the Buthelezi family to announce the passing away of Mr. Simiso Buthelezi who passed away last night the 7th June 2022 at a hospital in Durban.
"Boxing South Africa will conduct an independent medical review of the injury and will then make public the results of that medical review. The Buthelezi family and Boxing South Africa acknowledge warm words of condolences of the Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture.
"The Buthelezi family and Boxing South Africa will in due course make announcement on funeral arrangements.
"Boxing South Africa and the Buthelezi family wishes to request members of the public and the media to give them space while mourning the passing away of this great boxer who was exemplary both outside and inside the ring."

Recently, a boxing match that went down in South Africa found a scary moment happening where one boxer ended up fighting an invisible opponent.
Simiso Buthelezi was fighting Siphesihle Mntungwa for the WBF African lightweight title. While in the 10th round of the fight, Simiso was winning in the fight, when things seemingly took a turn. In the final round, Mntungwa was knocked through the ropes, but got up.
The referee cleared Mntungwa to fight, but Buthelezi turned to the ref, then squared up like he was his opponent. After the ref moved out of the way, the fighter began to swing at the air continuously, which made the ref call the fight.
Buthelezi was reportedly taken to a local hospital, where he was listed to be in stable condition. Watch the clip above.
