New details have been released regarding Dr. Mutulu Shakur, famed freedom fighter and stepfather to the late Tupac Shakur. After being denied parole, author and activist Kalonji Changa revealed that Shakur is battling stage 4 cancer while in federal custody.

Changa tweeted on Tuesday (May 31), "Just received word that Freedom Fighter #MutuluShakur is in hospice care w/ stage 4 cancer. Federal authorities are refusing to release him to his family so that he may transition peacefully at home. Baba to Tupac & Comrade to many of us his work has TRULY been an inspiration!"

At the end of March, Shakur provided an update about his health via his official Instagram page, as it was revealed that he was battling stage 3 bone marrow cancer from prison. The message added, "He did have a stem cell transplant, but then experienced an early relapse necessitating a new and highly dangerous chemotherapy that still only delays the cancer’s progress. Leaving him in prison while the chemotherapy suppresses his immune system places his life in further jeopardy — Dr. Shakur’s immediate compassionate release is the only humane response."
