Last Sunday a group of youth basketball players viciously attacked a referee on the basketball court, just as the final seconds on the game clock ticked away. The shameful act was certainly a low light for what was intended to be a recreational church event for kids and families in Lithonia, Georgia.
Video from the amateur basketball game at Stronghold Christian Church clearly illustrates a group of kids, some of whom were in uniforms while others were in street clothes, aggressively approaching a referee before he makes an attempt to back peddle away from the group. But, after one of the kids takes a swing at him with their fists, he obliges the group by throwing a haymaker of his own. This only makes matters worse and the group of kids begins to swarm the referee with a barrage of punches and kicks. The skirmish didn't last very long, but the referee was clearly shaken up after getting jumped.
Police arrived on the scene moments later and an investigation is already in full swing. To that, a representative from Stronghold Christian Church recently voiced their displeasure with the infamous ordeal that is now being unfairly associated with their establishment.
“It is truly unfortunate about the turn of events that took place during the basketball game held at our facility this weekend," the representative said. "We open our doors to serve our community and our goal is to provide an atmosphere conducive for enjoyment, enrichment, etc.”
It is unclear whether or not any arrests have been made or warrants have been issued in the aftermath of the scuffle. Scroll up to watch footage of the fight.
