Florida Governor Ron DeSantis signed the controversial "Don't Say Gay" bill, otherwise known as the “Parental Rights in Education” bill, into law on Monday. The measure will restrict schools from teaching students about LGBTQ+ related topics in the classroom.

The bill forbids school districts across the state from encouraging “classroom discussion about sexual orientation or gender identity in primary grade levels.” Critics of the bill call it a sign of legally codified homophobia and an example of further marginalizing those groups.

In response to the backlash, DeSantis said, “We will continue to recognize that in the state of Florida, parents have a fundamental role in the education, health care and well-being of their children. We will not move from that.”
