Former Boston police commissioner Edward Davis and former high-ranking CIA official Ric Prado investigated the 2019 shooting of David "Big Papi" Ortiz, and they say Dominican drug trafficker César Peralta orchestrated the attack. According to the investigation, which was published in the Boston Globe, Peralta was jealous and felt disrespected by Ortiz, who was nearly killed in the shooting in a Dominican nightclub.
Ortiz's spokesperson, Joe Baerlein, revealed to the Globe that the investigation findings were withheld for Ortiz's safety until Peralta was in U.S. custody. Peralta was extradited to Puerto Rico in 2019 on unrelated charges of conspiracy to import cocaine and heroin. He has not been charged for shooting Ortiz, but thirteen people have been charged in relation to Ortiz’s shooting and are awaiting trial in the Dominican Republic.
Peralta’s lawyer, Joaquin Perez, denied the kingpin's involvement in the shooting. Perez stated, "As bad as César Peralta is, it’s not even close to being in the ballpark to say he had something to do with this. While Ortiz says he only knows Peralta casually, Peralta's lawyer claims they were "close friends." Ortiz's spokesperson says the former baseball star was "sad, confused, angry, all kinds of emotions" after getting the news from the private investigators stating that Peralta was behind the attack.
