Ever since Catwoman made her debut on network television back in 1940, many talented actresses have taken on the iconic role. The most notable interpretations of the fictional comic book character-brought-to-life were presented by Eartha Kitt, Michelle Phifer, Halle Berry, and Anne Hathaway. While the ethnicity of the on-camera character has always been fluid, the sexual identity of the antihero has not. But according to Zöe Kravitz, her portrayal of Catwoman in the upcoming film, The Batman, will stay true to the character's origin story, which is often depicted as bisexual in the DC comic books.
During a recent interview with the Australian website The Pedestrian, the 33-year-old daughter of Lenny Kravitz all but confirmed the notion. When asked by a reporter if the Catwoman character in the latest Batman movie had feelings for an on-screen associate of the same sex named 'Anika,' it certainly wasn't met with any push back.
“That’s definitely the way I interpreted that, that they had some kind of romantic relationship,” Zoë said.
However, in a separate interview with The Pedestrian, Matt Reeves, the director of The Batman did not seem to be fully on board with Zöe's sexual interpretation of Catwoman.
“In terms of her relationship with Anika, I spoke to Zoë very early on and one of the things she said which I loved was that she’s drawn to strays because she was a stray and so she really wants to care for these strays because she doesn’t want to be that way anymore and Anika is like a stray and she loves her," Reeves said. "She actually represents this connection that she has to her mother who she lost, who was a stray anymore. So I don’t think we meant to go directly in that way, but you can interpret it that way for sure. She has an intimacy with that character and it’s a tremendous and deep caring for that character, more so than a sexual thing, but there was meant to be quite an intimate relationship between them.”
The March 4th release of The Batman will mark the second reboot of the franchise since Christopher Nolan concluded his award-winning trilogy back in 2012.
