Previously, Spotify CEO Daniel Ek appeared on CNBC and spoke about the Joe Rogan controversy. Ek said, “There are many things that Joe Rogan says that I strongly disagree with and find very offensive,” and noted Spotify wouldn’t change their policies over ‘one creator.’ ” Now, Ek has reportedly explained his position in the situation via a staff email.
Ek went on to say, “While I strongly condemn what Joe has said and I agree with his decision to remove past episodes from our platform, I realize some will want more.” He continued saying, “I want to make one point very clear—I do not believe that silencing Joe is the answer. We should have clear lines around content and take action when they are crossed, but canceling voices is a slippery slope.”
From there, Ek went on to say Spotify is investing $100 million for “licensing, development, and marketing of music artists (artists and songwriters) and audio content from historically marginalized groups.” As of now, Spotify has reportedly deleted over 100 episodes of ‘The Joe Rogan Experience’ from their platform.
