Ashanti recently sat down with The Breakfast Club, where she opened up about re-recording her first album due to not owning her masters.
Ashanti explained that after 20 years, an artist gets the right to re-record their music and get money from those masters. She added that she might add some features to the re-recordings, and Ashanti went on to speak about her first record deal with Jive at just 14. Ashanti explained that she had 3 failed record deals before signing to Murder Inc.
While speaking about her deal with Murder Inc. and trying to negotiate with Irv Gotti about getting her masters so that a band could play her music at concerts. Ashanti said that there was an issue with Irv when she brought up the conversation, and Ashanti alluded to Universal, not Irv, owning the masters.
Moving along, Ashanti revealed that she spoke to Ja Rule about re-recording her album and wanting to own her masters. She explained that Ja Rule didn't want to be caught in the middle of a dispute with Ashanti and Irv, but she added that Ja Rule "knows what's right" when it comes to owning your music.
