A high school basketball game in Iowa ended in violence Tuesday after a player from Carlisle High School attacked a player from Nevada High School during postgame handshakes.

Video footage captured the altercation after Nevada's 72-47 win over Carlisle. The postgame tradition seemed to go as planned until a Carlisle player punches a Nevada player in the stomach before striking him in the face, causing him to fall into the arms of a teammate. The clip ends as both teams attempt to separate the opposing players.

"It's a very unfortunate situation," said Nevada superintendent Dr. Steve Gray who also revealed that the player who was attacked is doing okay. "I'm happy they deescalated it. I thought our coaches and staff handled it well and got everyone out of there without it worsening."

Carlisle's superintendent also spoke out about the incident and condemned the actions of the player who threw the two punches.

"This is without question an unfortunate incident that is not representative of the school culture that exists in Carlisle Community School District," he said. "I want to make it clear that this type of conduct is not tolerated at Carlisle CSD. The district will follow the student code of conduct policy and procedures throughout the investigation of this incident and implement appropriate consequences. All proper authorities have been notified of the incident including IHSAA."

While it is unclear what caused the physical altercation, both players have been identified as seniors at their respective schools. Carlisle PD is also aware of the incident and is conducting an investigation.
