In 2019, fashion brand Burberry came under fire after showcasing a hoody from their collection that featured a noose around the next of the collar. Before that, Gucci faced backlash for debuting a sweater that resembled blackface. Now, it appears Givenchy didn’t learn from past fashion houses’ ignorant mistakes, as the brand revealed a noose-like necklace on one of the models during their Spring/Summer 2022 showing this past Sunday.

According to reports, the necklace is a part of Givenchy creative director Matthew M. Williams’ first collection for the brand. Williams claims the pieces draw inspiration from Grim Reaper paintings in collaboration with Josh Smith. Despite the explanation, Givenchy faced much backlash following the show, with people comparing the piece in the collection to the mishaps by Gucci and Burberry a few years ago.

While many were focused on the racial implications tied to the noose necklace, many were just as focused on the suicide aspect, as nooses are a tool used by people to hang themselves. As of now, Givenchy has not responded.
