A preview clip of Lizzo's upcoming TED Talk was recently revealed on TED's Instagram account. The singer's session was centered around the origins of twerking and she revealed her butt is her least favorite part of her body despite the attention she's gained from it.
"My a** has been the topic of conversation," Lizzo said in her opening remarks. "My a** has been in magazines, Rihanna gave my a** a standing ovation. Yes, my booty. My least favorite part of my body. How did this happen? Twerking. Through the movement of twerking I've discovered my ass is my greatest asset. Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to TED Twerk."
She discussed the origins of twerking, stating Black people carry "this dance through our DNA, through our blood, through our bones." She also addressed other cultures adopting and profiting from the dance while not crediting Black people.
"I want to add to the classical etymology of this dance because it matters," Lizzo added. "From TikTok trends to songs and humor, we see so much erasure of what Black people have created. I'm not trying to gatekeep, But I'm definitely trying to let you know who built the damn gate."
Lizzo's full TED Talk is expected to be released this fall. Look above to view the preview clip.
