Update 07/26/2021 2:01pm:

Recently, Grimes took to social media and revealed that Lil Uzi Vert is close to becoming the first person to legally own a planet. The girlfriend of Elon Musk claimed the rapper owns a planet called WASP-127b, and Uzi responded by saying, “I tried to surprise everyone. Still working on it.” However, experts are claiming that Uzi’s revelation is “bogus.”

Via Business Insider, a professor of Space Law at the Unversity of Nebraska-Lincoln named Frans Von Der Dunk said, “it’s fraud.” Dunk went on to point out the 1967 Outer Space Treaty that was sponsored by the United Nations. The treaty prohibits all nations and citizens of the nations from claiming any territory in outer space.

The director of McGill’s Institute of Air and Space Law—Ram Jakhu, also referenced the treaty, saying the closest anyone can get to owning land in outer space is collecting minerals. Jakhu said, “You can give them your money, but it doesn't mean anything. There will always be companies trying to sell you things. If they can make money off you, why wouldn't they? But, that doesn't mean it's legally recognized." Stay tuned for more updates.
