Track star Sha'Carri Richardson was trending after a Forbes story focusing on cannabis use by Olympians in Tokyo.

The story profiled the U.S. Women's National Team soccer star Megan Rapinoe who opened up about her CBD use during training. She spoke, in particular, about using CBD products made by Mendi, a CBD company co-founded by her sister Rachael Rapinoe.

Rapinoe told Forbes that CBD helps her with sleeping and recovering after training sessions. There appears to be a glaring double standard at play that many people pointed out on social media. However, there are compositional differences between THC and CBD along the lines of psychoactive elements. What's more, CBD is legal within the guidelines of Olympic drug policy, while THC violates the rule.

Nevertheless, the soccer star has been an open advocate for athletes' ability to use cannabis and supported Sha'Carri during her ordeal.

“We’re expected to perform on the biggest stages and highest levels, yet we can’t use all-natural products to help us recover,” Rapinoe wrote in a statement to Forbes. “It’s not right, and these policies need to be changed to reflect where our culture is.”

“The societal effect in terms of social justice that weed has had on this country is just absurd,” Rapinoe continued. “There are so many, mostly Black and Brown, people sitting in jail for 10 or 20-plus years for weed, and it’s completely unnecessary. From a social perspective, we’re long overdue for the legalization of cannabis.”
