A man who self-identifies with the "incel" label (involuntary celibate) was arrested and charged with plotting a mass shooting targeting students from a sorority at an Ohio university.

Tres Genco, 21, of Hillsboro, Ohio, was arrested on Wednesday and charged with one count of attempting to commit a hate crime and one count of illegally possessing a machinegun. The hate crime charge is punishable by up to life imprisonment. The machinegun charge is punishable by up to 10 years’ imprisonment.

Authorities say Genco maintained an active profile on incel sites since July 2019. Genco scoped the university in January 2020 and upon returning home began surfing the web for information related to the questions, “How to plan a shooting crime” and “When does preparing for a crime become an attempt?”

Police found several guns, boxes of ammo, and body armor while taking Genco into custody.
