Ice Cube confirmed during an interview with Big Boy that he was originally approached to play "Lucky" in John Singleton's Poetic Justice. While the role ended up going to 2Pac, Ice Cube never offered a public explanation as to why he turned down the role.

The NWA member explained that John Singleton approached him for the role and was "going to get me paid, too." However, the late director was reluctant to let Cube read the script. Once Ice Cube obtained the script, he spotted a major issue in the character that Singleton was not willing to change.

"I only had one problem with it and he didn't want to change it, so I didn't want to do it," Ice Cube explained around the 48:50 mark before describing what the issue was. "The problem was I didn't think -- me playing 2Pac -- that I would kick my homeboy out the car for a girl I just met when we got to Oakland. I didn't think that was cool...It made the character kind of a sucker to me."

Ice Cube also revealed he turned down the "O-Dog" role in Menace II Society because he had just played the "Doughboy" character in Boyz n the Hood and didn't want to be typecast.
