South African lawmakers are under fire after a polyandry proposal is being considered for ratification.

In hopes of making marriage more inclusive, South Africa's Department of Home Affairs proposed the idea as part of a larger piece of legislation aimed at addressing marriage inclusivity. Polygamy, the act of men having multiple wives, is already legal in South Africa.

"South Africa inherited a marriage regime that was based on the Calvinist Christian and Western traditions," the paper notes, adding that the current marriage laws are "not informed by an overarching policy that is based on constitutional values and the understanding of modern society dynamics."

While it is apparently legal for minors to be wed in South Africa, the law doesn't account for couples who change their sex and want to remain married without going through a divorce, in addition to several other things.
