Former Crip Sanyika Shakur, formerly known as Monster Kody, has reportedly passed away at the age of 57. On Tuesday, various people such as Vince Staples tweeted their condolences when it was learned that the author and motivational speaker died.

Born Kody Dejohn Scott, Shakur was a known member of the Eight Tray Gangster Crips. He earned his "Monster" name after assaulting a robbery victim as a 13-year-old. While in prison, he joined the Republic of New Afrika movement and changed his name. He later converted to Islam while incarcerated at Pelican Bay State Prison.

In 1993, Shakur published his classic memoir, Monster: The Autobiography of an L.A. Gang Member, which detailed gang culture and his transition out of the lifestyle. He was released from his final prison stint in 2012.
