Up-and-coming Brooklyn Drill rapper Supa Gates died last week after succumbing to his gunshot wounds from a shooting incident in April.
The 25-year-old rapper was shot multiple times on April 11, while he was in the passenger seat of a parked Mercedes in the Crown Heights neighborhood. The East Flatbush native had been recovering at the hospital until his passing.
Supa Gates' family believes envy over his rising rap career led to the shooting. His single, "Yellow Bentley," was featured on Drake's OVO Sound Radio, and he was reportedly about to sign a major deal and embark on his first tour.
"It wasn't anything. It really and truly was jealously," said Supa Gates' mother. "It wasn't a gang-related issue, it wasn't a drug-related issue. Nobody knows how hard I worked to make sure my kids are OK. People don't know the devastation they're causing, and how many lives they're destroying when they take somebody's child."
So far, no arrests have been made. Supa Gates is survived by a one-year-old son.
