A four-month-old boy died after sustaining injuries in a police shootout with his father in Biloxi, Mississippi on Monday (May 3).
The child's father, 30-year-old Eric Derell Smith, allegedly kidnapped 4-month-old La’Mello Parker after shooting and killing his ex-girlfriend, Christin Parker, 32, and her 26-year-old nephew, Brandon Parker. A police chase ensued when Smith was later spotted on Interstate 10 near the Louisiana-Mississippi state line. Police told FOX affiliate WALA that Smith used the baby as a "human shield" during the shootout, and La'Mello later died of his injuries in the hospital, while Smith was pronounced dead at the scene.
Biloxi police said a Harrison County sheriff’s deputy and a police officer who were involved in the shooting are on administrative leave pending the investigation.
