Update 04/21/2021 11:58am:

Las Vegas Raiders owner Mark Davis spoke out in light of a highly controversial tweet that read, "I CAN BREATHE 4-20-21" after Derek Chauvin was found guilty on all counts of killing George Floyd.

Davis told ESPN that he "meant no disrespect" to Floyd's family with the tweet. Davis then added that he "took the lead" from Floyd's brother, Philonise, who stated, "Today, we are able to breathe again," after the verdict.

Davis explained, "I felt that was a powerful statement. Today was a day where I can breathe, and we can all breathe again because justice was served. But we have a lot of work to do still on social justice and police brutality."

The Raiders owner also told the Associated Press that he was unaware that "I can breathe" was used by supporters of police in New York after the death of Eric Garner in 2014. Davis said he wouldn't have used the phrase if he knew its history. He explained, "It's a tough situation. I feel bad it was taken in a way it wasn't meant to be done. That can only be my fault for not explaining it."

The Las Vegas Raiders completely missed the mark with their post following the guilty verdict of former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin for the murder of George Floyd last May.

After Chauvin was found guilty on all three counts, the Raiders Twitter account shared a picture with the words "I Can Breathe" with the date and team logo. Many Twitter users found the post to be tone-deaf, considering George Floyd's pleas with officers during his 9-minute execution.
