News recently surfaced noting that the governor of Arkansas signed a bill that banned transgender women and girls from competing in school sports teams that are consistent with the gender they identify with. Now, Tennessee governor Bill Lee has signed a transgender sports bill into law, with the law requiring students to prove their sex at birth in order to be allowed to play on middle school and high school sports teams.

Lee took to Twitter and gave some insight on the bill, saying, “I signed the bill to preserve women's athletics and ensure fair competition. This legislation responds to damaging federal policies that stand in opposition to the years of progress made under Title IX, and I commend members of the General Assembly for their bipartisan work."

The bill notes: “a student's gender for purposes of participation in a public middle school or high school interscholastic athletic activity or event be determined by the student's sex at the time of the student's birth, as indicated on the student's original birth certificate.”

The bill doesn’t apply to students in kindergarten through 4th grade and notes that students have to show proof of their sex at the time of birth if their birth certificate doesn’t point out their gender at the time of birth. Stay tuned for more updates.
