Donald Trump's departure from office has resulted in viewership declines for various news outlets, most notably CNN.
According to reports, CNN is losing around a million viewers on average each night since former President Donald Trump left office. In addition, viewership is down nearly 50% in the news company's key 24-54 age group.
CNN is losing around a million viewers on average each night since President Donald Trump left office - and is down nearly 50% in the key 24-54 age group, a report said on Thursday.
The cable news channel's prime-time viewership has dropped 36% since Biden took office in January, with prime-time viewership of adults between the ages of 24 and 54 dropping 47% since Election Day.
The network's daytime viewership averaged 1.7 million total daytime viewers from November 4th through January 20th and has since suffered a 34% decline, averaging 1.1 million daytime viewers since Biden took office.
Fox News has also suffered ratings declines. Fox Corp. CEO Lachlan Murdoch recently responded to reports that Fox News' total-day and prime-time ratings dropped 13% since the election. Murdoch said the ratings decline was due to its audience being disappointed in the election results but suggested that ratings will improve as the network plays loyal opposition to the Biden administration for "at least the next four years."
Jason Kilar, CEO of CNN's parent company WarnerMedia, said the company is doing well because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
"It turns out the pandemic is a pretty big part of the news cycle and that's not going away any time soon," Kilar said. "If you take a look at the ratings and the performance, it's going well. I think it's going well because A. the team at CNN is doing a fantastic job and B. it turns out the pandemic and the way that we can inform and help contextualize the business is really good for ratings."
In 2020, CNN had its most-watched prime time ratings ever while Fox News had its best viewership year ever amid the pandemic.
