An American man accused of participating in January's deadly riots at the United States Capitol building was summoned to New York court after he was deported from Kenya.

The FBI arrested Isaac Sturgeon upon his arrival at JFK Airport this past weekend. The 32-year-old appeared in federal court on Monday, where it was revealed that he had been staying in Kenya since January 24th and was planning to return to the U.S. in April.

The Montana native fled to the African country after texting others to ask if he was a wanted man after the Capitol riot. Sturgeon was deported from Kenya after an arrest warrant was issued by the FBI.

Prosecutors claimed that Sturgeon was seen participating in the insurrection on an officer's bodycam and said the suspect poses a flight risk. However, Sturgeon argued that he wasn't trying to flee and travels frequently.

Sturgeon has been released on a $250,000 bond and is charged with seven counts, including obstruction of justice, an act of physical violence in the Capitol grounds, and disorderly conduct in a restricted building. He faces up to 20 years in prison if convicted.
